Reinvent the Two-Wheel!
The Bicycle Ballet
Swirling, Weaving, Spinning, Twirling, Whizzing, Ambling, Whirling Dance!
The Bicycle Ballet is a dance of cycling, a spectacular choreography about riding a bike.
This urban ballet explores the feelings of ecstatic joy when you get on your bike with the wind behind you and the sun on your face, tempered by the gritty reality of manoeuvring amongst traffic and pollution.
This original art street piece (Irish premiere) is choreographed by Chloé de Buyl-Pisco, performed by No Frontiers Dance Company in collaboration with local young people skilled in urban vehicle freestyle.
The Bicycle Ballet is to be performed on Grand Parade on the 20th and 21st of June 2008 at 1 pm, as part of Cork Midsummer Festival: http://www.corkmidsummer.com/2008/events/bicycle
Transport
Cycling
We advise of course all participants, where possible, to leave cars at home and use their bikes to reach the different venues of the festival!
Bicycle racks are disposed on Grand Parade, Saint Patrick’s Street, South Mall and Parnell Place. Special arrangements like bicycle parking spaces and cloakrooms for cycling gear and clothes will be provided at the different festival venues, where possible.
If you need to dust off, repair or check that you bicycle is in good working order, or if you want to rent a two-wheel please check Cork Cycling Campaign website for a list of bike shops in Cork: http://www.corkcyclingcampaign.com/shops.htm
Alternatively, Cork Community Bikes is developing a do-it-yourself bike workshop for the community to use, which is opened to the general public every Saturday afternoon. The workshop is a centre of training and a social focus for anybody with an interest in bicycles in Cork:

When Cycling…
Check all fastenings are secure, wear a helmet, wear high-visibility armband, belt, vest or jacket to be easily seen in traffic and use good front and rear lights at night.
The rules of the road and traffic laws apply to cyclists: signal before turning, use correct lane, stop at red lights, etc. Good road sense includes being vigilant in traffic, waiting/regrouping away from junctions and being alert for pedestrians unaware of silent cyclists.
Don’t forget that a little courtesy goes a long way!
